Co-management and protection of forests – suitable approach for the people living near forests in Bar Goc village, Sa Son commune, Sa Thay district, Kon Tum province
The Kon Tum provincial Science and Technology Association (KUSTA), Sa Thay district department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chu Mom Ray national park and CIRUM cooperated to organize a study tour for exchanging experiences of growing Sa nhân tím (Amomum longiligulare) to Son Lang commune, K’Bang district of Gia Lai province on May 7th, 2017. There were 30 participants, including both husbands and wives from 10 households of the Gia Rai ethnic group from Bar Goc village, Sa Sơn commune who have been getting contract for protection of 20 hectares of forests within the administrative and servicing area of the Chu Mom Ray national park. The participants are expected to become beneficiaries and pilot model builders in the future.
The study tour aimed at linking people, sharing experiences and helping participants to see clearer economic, social and environmental results deriving from integrating Amomum longiligulare under the shadow of forests. With the method of people to people sharing and direct seeing, asking and practicing for everyone on the site in a thorough way, participants saw the study tour comfortable and useful for them. After the study tour, participants discussed to set up action plan to integrate Amomum longiligulare into 20 hectares of forests in order to combine forest protection with creation of stable income for the Bar Gốc villagers.
If this pilot model is going well, the pilot of co-management of forests will be demonstrated in Kon Tum province, and this will be significant for the Chư Mom Ray national park, Sa Sơn communal authority, and especially for 10 Gia Rai ethnic households of Bar Gốc village in turning forest land conflict to cooperation for sustainable forest protection and development. Mrs. Y Đâu, a Gia Rai ethnic woman from Bar Gốc village stated "Participating in the study tour and exchanging at the pilot model of growing Amomum longiligulare is very useful for us. The pilot model does not help protect forest, but also create stable income for villagers every year. There is Amomum longiligulare growing naturally on our contracted forestland, but we did not know how to care for it so far. After this trip, I know how to choose right place to grow this species, how to select seeds, to dig holes and grow the plant. My family will make effort to grow Amomum longiligulare under the shadow of our contracted two-hectare forest".
